Earlier this week I was sent a copy of the first episode of a brand new local comedy-drama, Ekstra Medium and it is really, really good! It kicks off on kykNet this coming Tuesday, the 22nd of September. One of the many reasons why this series will turn out a major success could be credited to its team of writers, which includes Retief Scholtz and Beer Adriaanse. Beer is also always involved in quality stuff, so I decided to go see what else I can find out there with his name attached to it, be it his role actor, writer, director or producer. Plus he is a really nice human being!

Fynskrif
Another one with Neels van Jaarsveld. Fynskrif is a kykNET drama which centers around the law firm, Van Wyk & Vennote. Very clever title, seeing that “fynskrif” means “small print” – that kak that no-one ever reads that normally gets them into kak. Also starring Kim Cloete.
Die Seemeeu
This movie brags with some big names like Albert Pretorius, Sandra Prinsloo and Marius Wyers. Die Seemeeu is based on the very famous classic play by Anton Chekhov, The Seagull and is adapted and placed in a 1990s South Africa where characters deal with self doubt, regret, inner fear, longings, and recriminations and miseries of their own device. Fokken heavy. Fokken awesome.
You know what South Africa has fokol of in terms of movies? Horrors! We finally have one and a good one at that! So, a preacher tries that whole exorcism thing and it fucks out very lelik because he summons an evil demon in stead. A demon that’s hellbent on triggering a mass suicide. Jissis! The pastor must keep the demon contained but there’s a group of tjommies coming to set it free. I kak my pant.
Hugo, bel die polisie!
A movie celebrating the life of the lead singer of the Gereformeerde Blues Band, Johannes Kerkorrel who committed suicide in 2002.
Through flashbacks and voice overs we re-live the rise of the Voëlvry movement and the rebellion of young, Afrikaans students in the build-up to the fall of the National Party. A group of friend celebrate his life and the passing of an era and at the same time cope with their confusion of being young and trying to figure out how they fit into the world.
