Our top 10 weekly selection of DSTV Now | Showmax | YouTube | Netflix | Amazon Prime

Ok, it is not only action thrillers but the list for this weekend’s streaming suggestions is mainly made up of action & thrillers. Like, it is 70% there, verstaan? We did gooi in a few other genres as well – for instance there is a fokken lekker Guy Ritchie comedy and you know that those Guy Ritchie movies actually also qualify as action thrillers at the same time. There is also a brand new local drama in the mix which was released last month! Apart from one movie on the list dating from 2015, the rest were released in 2019 and 2020, so everything is relatively fresh.

The Silencing (thriller, 2020)
A reformed hunter living in isolation on a wildlife sanctuary becomes involved in a deadly game of cat and mouse when he and the local Sheriff set out to track a vicious killer who may have kidnapped his daughter years ago.  Lekker wild!

The Hunt (action horror, 2020)
Written by the okes who wrote Watchmen and The Leftovers. Merciless elitists gather at a remote location to hunt humans for sport. Blerrie dose! Their plan is derailed when one of the hunted turns the tables on her pursuers.  The movie was unfortunately yanked from its original release date due to mass shootings, then rescheduled for March 13th, 2020. The COVID-19 fucked it up at the box office.

Angel Has Fallen (action, crime & mystery, 2019)
This is the third installment for which Gerard Butler returns. Mike Banning is on the run after he is framed for the attempted assassination of the President. The production on this film was delayed by three months. Gerard Butler poesed off his bike and needed time to recover.

The Day We Didn’t Meet (drama, romance, 2021)
This is the brand new South African film I was talking about which came out a few weeks ago.  Past lovers Sam and Alex have a chance encounter and immediately fall back into an old game of playing house. Finding solace in the comfort of this fantasy, they convince each other to escape to a secluded beach house – pausing their real lives just for a while. But they’ve done this before, 7 years ago. Back then it was easy; it was right after university ended, before real life started. When they first fabricated a fantasy of being an old married couple. But the fantasy snowballed, and real life would knock on the door soon enough. In an attempt to relive their youth, and maybe have a second chance at that ever-elusive idea of ‘true’ love, Sam and Alex are faced with themselves and the time that has passed and finally have to make amends with the day they didn’t meet. This sounds lekker, so Imma put it at my number 1 outjie to stream on Sunday arwie…

Midway (action, 2019)
The Battle of Midway was a clash between American adn Japanese soldiers, so it is based on real events. It stars  Woody Harrelson, Patrick Wilson and Luke Evans. A very weird thing happened a month before the movie’s premiere – the wreckage of the Akagi and the Kaga were found!

The Gentlemen (comedy, 2019)
Guy Ritchie directs a star-studded cast in this crime drama. A talented American graduate of Oxford, using his unique skills, and audacity, creates a marijuana empire using the estates of impoverished British aristocrats. However, when he tries to sell his empire to a fellow American billionaire, a chain of events unfolds, involving blackmail, deception, mayhem and murder between street thugs, Russian oligarchs, Triad gangsters and gutter journalists.

21 Bridges (action crime thriller, 2019)
Jissis, it is so sad that Black Panther sater, Chadwick Boseman passed away from cancer last year. He was only 43 years old and still had a massive career ahead of him. He is an absolute power in this crime thriller. A detective leads a manhunt for two cop killers and is thrust into a massive and unexpected conspiracy. Here is just another example of what a lekker oke Chadwick Boseman was: He donated part of his own salary for the movie to co-star Sienna Miller when the studio refused to match her demands. Jirre!

Room (thriller. 2015)
Although this movie is the oldest of the bunch, Brie Larson won an Oscar for this deeply moving film. Having been kept captive in an enclosed room with his mother his entire life, five-year-old Jack finally helps them to escape, discovering the outside world for the first time. This movie is fokken heavy but so, so good! Brie Larson tunes that she never washed her face during filming, to really make clear on-camera that she was not wearing any makeup.

Need more streaming goodness? Check out our top 10 list of movies and TV series picks from the Plumlist. It is my to-go-to website when I’m stuck for streaming ideas from Netflix, Showmax and Amazon Prime:
#10. The best series coming to Showmax in 2021
No matter what unfolds on a global level in 2021, one thing’s for sure – there’s an incredible line-up of entertainment heading to Showmax subscribers’ screens. This is the projection for the rest of the year so far – the list will keep being updated as the months go by.

# 9. Series and movies to stream on Apple TV+ in South Africa
Like its electronic devices, Apple TV+ maintains a superior attitude of slick classiness, making it highly desirable. In the arena with streaming platforms like Netflix, Showmax and Amazon Prime in South Africa, and multiple other on-demand services in the US, Apple TV+ is a relatively new player, having launched at the end of 2019 – but it has some quality content, which is increasing all the time, and the awards committees are taking notes.

#8 Stream 9 of the 2021 Golden Globe Award winners
Cinema has the Oscars, television has the Emmys; it’s always been clear and exclusive. The Golden Globes honour both, and not even that long ago, the movie categories belonged to films on the big screen, and TV knew its place – in the home. In 2021 the line between the two is blurrier.

#6 Ten basketball series and documentaries to add to your watchlist
The Americans are basketball crazy. It’s a dense topic with tales of players who begin in high school and go on to college, where they’re not supposed to be paid, and scholarships are won on ability on court rather than good academic grades. It’s played in public parks for fun, and in prison for recreation. It’s always highly competitive.

#5 Meet the all-star cast of DAM, the Showmax Original thriller series
DAM has been called “South Africa’s answer to The Outsider and Sharp Objects“. It was shot on location in the Eastern Cape, and comes from the pen of four-time SAFTA winner Alex Yazbek. As you’ll see, the ensemble cast is full of exceptional local talent. Here’s a guide to the characters in DAM, and the stars who bring them to life.

4# Seven of the best Amazon Original movies to stream on Prime Video
HBO’s dystopian space opera has made waves with its bold vision and sweeping visuals of desolate alien landscapes, all filmed in Cape Town. But it’s not only the gorgeous cinematography, typical of anything Ridley Scott, that’s had fans gripped, eagerly following each episode.

#3 The psychotic ego of Mark Hofmann in Murder Among the Mormons
The title of, and the trailer for, this latest three-part Netflix original docuseries is sensationalist and a tad misleading. Yes, there was murder. Yes, Mormons were involved – directly and indirectly

#2 Interview: Leandie du Randt on weapons training and healing after divorce
Leandie du Randt is a familiar face on South African TV and movie screens and you’re about to see her a lot more on TV, seeing as she recently landed the role of presenter on Love Island South Africa. We chatted to her about her journey to stardom, her favourite and least favourite roles and on never being able to f**k up.

#1 Afrikaans limited series 4 Mure is pure escapism
When Covid landed on South African shores last year during its very rude and unwelcome world tour, everything ground to a screeching halt. And yet, during the most stringent lockdowns in South Africa in 2020, a lot of us had to think out of the box.
